How to Make White People Laugh

How To Make White People Laugh by Negin Farsad (narrated by the author)
Genre: Humor, Memoir, Creative Nonfiction
ISBN: 9781478908685
Pub date: May 24th 2016 by Grand Central Publishing
Rating: 5

I really enjoyed this book. It was clever and hilarious, and there were lots of great stories. Farsad brought a lot of heavy topics to the table, but in a way that showed the problem without pointing fingers and hating. I laughed the whole time and really enjoyed myself.

Farsad referenced her documentary and comedy show The Muslims Are Coming quite a bit. I have totally added it to my To-Watch list. See the trailer below.

About the Book

From the acclaimed writer, director, and star of the hit documentary The Muslims are Coming! comes a memoir in essays about growing up Iranian-American in a post-9/11 world and the power of comedy to combat racism.

Negin Farsad is an Iranian-American-Muslim female stand-up comedian who believes she can change the world through jokes. And yes, sometimes that includes fart jokes. In this candid and uproarious book, Farsad shares her personal experiences growing up as the "other" in an American culture that has no time for nuance. In fact, she longed to be black and/or Mexican at various points of her youth, you know, like normal kids. Right? RIGHT?

Writing bluntly and hilariously about the elements of race we are often too politically correct to discuss, Farsad takes a long hard look at the iconography that still shapes our concepts of "black," "white," and "Muslim" today-and what it means when white culture defines the culture. Farsad asks the important questions like, What does it mean to have a hyphenated identity? How can we actually combat racism, stereotyping, and exclusion? Do Iranians get bunions at a higher rate than other ethnic groups? (She's asking for a friend.)

HOW TO MAKE WHITE PEOPLE LAUGH tackles these questions with wit, humor, and incisive intellect. And along the way, you might just learn a thing or two about tetherball, Duck Dynasty, and wine slushies.

Book review: How To Twist A Dragon's Tail

How To Twist A Dragon's Tail by Cressida Cowell
Genre: Children's Adventure
ISBN: 9781478981022
Published: February 10th 2014 by Blackstone Audiobooks (first published 2007)
Rating: 5

I am a huge fan of Cressida Cowell. She's on my Author Watch list! I think she's brilliant. This is the fifth book in the How To Train Your Dragon series, and it was just as clever and hilarious as the other ones. The writing is an interesting combination of poetic and satirical, with just a twinge of sarcasm. The characters are so full of life that I feel like they're my friends. The funny parts are hilarious, and the dramatic parts literally sent shivers down my spine. Only Cressida Cowell can make a fart joke and then make you want to cry two seconds later.

Also. The audiobooks are narrated by David Tennant. So there's that.

If you haven't listened or read them yet, do so immediately. I guarantee you'll want to be a viking within the first chapter.

Appropriate for all ages

About the book:
In the fifth adventure in the How to Train Your Dragon series, someone has stolen the Fire-Stone. Now the volcano on Volcano Island has become active and the tremors are hatching the eggs of the Exterminator dragons! Can Hiccup return the Fire-Stone to the Volcano, stop the Volcano from erupting, and save the Tribes from being wiped out by the terrible sword-claws of the Exterminators?

We have an office mouse

He's cute but I don't really want him here.......

Maybe we should get an office cat?

Music Monday - Evan Wickham

Today I'm featuring Evan Wickham from Noisetrade! I downloaded his album ages ago around Christmas time. And I know, 'tis not the season, but we had a Christmas in July party yesterday and now there are Christmas trees everywhere, so I'm feeling it.

This is the best Christmas album I've ever listened to. I love it so much. It's free on Noisetrade for a limited time, and I hope you guys give it a chance, and consider tipping the artist!

Book Review: Fellside by M. R. Carey

Fellside by M. R. Carey
Genre: Psychological Thriller, Mystery, Crime
ISBN: 9781478940968
Pub date: May 5th 2016 by Hachette Audio (first published April 5th 2016)
Rating: 5

Fellside was a unique combination of psychological, thriller, supernatural, crime, and romance. When I say psychological, it was because it makes you think; thriller because I couldn't put it down, and found my heart racing; romance not in the typical sense of the term, but a deep and surprising love that brought all the characters to a new level, and puts the reader in a different frame of mind. It was the kind of book you know is completely unrealistic, but since the author believes in it, you believe in it. It begins with a mysterious tug, and right as you fall in love with the main character she starts to break your heart.
M. R. Carey doesn’t write cute books, or sweet books, or books that are easy to read. They make you think and confront how you feel about certain things; but it’s beautiful in it’s own way.
I am totally in love with this story, this world, the concept, and the way it all comes together in the end. I definitely recommend it for ages 16+, but not as a light beach-read or hour-at-a-time read. Sit down and chew on this one, and let your mind go where it wants to.

Content/Recommendation: Ages 16+ for some violent scenes. This is a women's prison.

About Fellside
Fellside is a maximum security prison on the edge of the Yorkshire Moors. It's not the kind of place you'd want to end up. But it's where Jess Moulson could be spending the rest of her life.
It's a place where even the walls whisper.
And one voice belongs to a little boy with a message for Jess.
Will she listen?

Don’t forget that Fellside is eligible for the worldwide giveaway!

aaaand go!

What happened to the book blog world?

It was like I went to college, my blog slowed down because I was doing a double major in three years, and I came back and now my blog is dead. Is it still out there and I have to break back into it again? Was there a memo I missed? And when did the book blogs ning shut down? Where did everyone go?
