5 basic essential oil recipes–Essential Oils and Aromatherapy

Essential Oils and Aromatherapy by Daniel Alley

I’m happy to bring you this awesome guide for beginners for using essential oils, entitled E
Essential Oils and Aromatherapy.  It’s an excellent book that breaks down the basics of using oils, what they do, how to use them properly, and some basic blends and recipes. If you are curious about essential oils and want a simple and easy-to-follow guide, this is your book!

Here are my five favorite essential oil recipes!

1.Egg shells, Honey, and Tea Tree Oil
take 2-4 egg shells and wash them out, and try them. Grind them to a fine powder in a food processor or blender. Mix with a little bit of honey, olive oil, and a few drops of tea tree oil. This is a therapeutic healing mask that will soften and whiten the skin. Wash off with warm water and pat your skin dry.

2. Coffee grounds, Peppermint, and Almond oil
This is a great toning and tightening scrub awesome for your back, arms, and legs. use 1/2 cup coffee grounds, mix almond oil until you have a good consistency, and then add a few drops of peppermint. I recommend Radha Beauty peppermint oil; it’s amazing and you won’t regret it. You can also use this blend in your hair and scalp!

3. Egg yolk, coconut oil, Rosemary, and lemongrass
Mix the egg yolk, a spoonful of coconut oil or olive oil, and a few drops of rosemary and lemongrass oil together until it’s smooth. working with damp (not wet) hair, start at the tips and work the treatment up towards the roots until your hair is completely covered. Wrap in a shower cap or plastic bag and let it sit for 30-45 minutes. wash it out with COLD water. (if you use hot water, it’ll cook the egg, and it’ll be a pain to get it out of your hair)

4. Crushed Garlic, Frankincense, and Eucalyptus
This is a great treatment for acne! The frankincense pulls the nastiness to the surface; the garlic kills every kind of bacteria. The eucalyptus is healing, therapeutic, and soothing. You can use this on open acne if you have a popped pimple (it will work even better) but it’ll hurt like a mofo.

5. Salt, Coconut Butter, and your favorite oil.
This is just a basic salt scrub. I used orange oil when I made this blend in the video below; it’s super easy! It makes a awesome exfoliating salt scrub and leaves your skin feeling soft, conditioned, and alive.

What can you do with a ravioli set?

I plan on making ravioli eventually, but as we had a bug infestation and all my flour had to be thrown out, so I had to improvise.

IMG_20160928_200749815

So I used these to make chocolate bree hand-pies. They were amazing!

The ravioli set sliced right through the dough no problem, and gave the cute little ripples on the edge that I was hoping for. I'm sure they'd be great for scones, shortbread, and biscuits too!

Here’s the video of the process. Enjoy!

Review: Hope and Red

Hope and Red, by Jon Skovron
Genre: Adventure, Fantasy
ISBN: 9780356507125
Published: June 30th 2016 by Orbit
Rating: 4

There are 2 things I want to say about this audiobook.

1. The narration does not fit the feel of the book. The narrator would be great for a kids story but not for an adventure story like this. So if I were you, I would read it, not listen to it.

2. When I first started it, I had my doubts; but about 2 chapters in, I knew I was hooked. Even though the narration irritated me, this story is so involved, exciting, entertaining, and all-consuming, that I am dying for the next one. I am so excited and will be waiting for the release date.

If you love adventures, pirates, revenge, and a little hint of magic, this one is for you.

Content/Recommendation: Some violence and mention of sex, but no sexual content. Ages 16+

About the book:

In a fracturing empire spread across savage seas, two young people from different cultures find common purpose. A nameless girl is the lone survivor when her village is massacred by biomancers, mystical servants of the emperor. Named after her lost village, Bleak Hope is secretly trained by a master Vinchen warrior as an instrument of vengeance. A boy becomes an orphan on the squalid streets of New Laven and is adopted by one of the most notorious women of the criminal underworld, given the name Red, and trained as a thief and con artist. When a ganglord named Deadface Drem strikes a bargain with the biomancers to consolidate and rule all the slums of New Laven, the worlds of Hope and Red come crashing together, and their unlikely alliance takes them further than either could have dreamed possible

About the Author:

Jon Skovron is the author of several Young Adult fantasy novels, including Misfit, Man Made Boy and This Broken Wondrous World. His first adult fantasy series, The Empire of Storms, began last June with the release of Hope and Red, published by Orbit Books. The Barnes and Noble SF&F blog said "Skovron’s briskly-paced story doesn’t skimp on the world-building—and thank goodness, because it’s quite a world", and author Sam Sykes described it as "Furious where it needs to be, deceptively tender where it can get away with it, adventurous all around." The second book in the series, Bane and Shadow, will be out February 2017.

Brewing Coffee with ICOSA

I’m a huge fan of coffee, but I am picky about my hot coffee. ICOSA’s pour-over makes the quality that I expect.

I’m also a huge fan of supporting small business. That’s why I use beans from Cup – a –Joe, a local roastery in my area. Their beans are amazing; in this video I featured their Kenya AA.
Enjoy! Grab your ICOSA pour over here!

Special thank you to ICOSA for sending me this filter!

Did you know that all natural nail polish remover is a thing?

I ddin’t know that was a thing. I figured all nail polish remover was created equal. Clearly I was wrong.

I got some all natural nail polish remover from Pure Vitality Beauty. It claims to remove nail polish using only natural ingredients.

I'm really happy with this nail polish remover. I read the instructions carefully; it said to leave on the nails for 5 minutes to allow the oils to put nutrition into the nail as well as remove the polish. I don't know how that works, but I can say it took polish off just fine, super fast, without the five minutes.

It comes with a dropper, so I just went to the sink, put a drop or two on each nail and let it hang out there for a bit (maybe 20 seconds?) and then wiped it off with a paper towel.

The biggest thing I LOVE about this remover is that IT DOESN'T STING. I have battled picking at my nails for my whole life, and the biggest reason I avoid nail polish is how bad the remover stings when I have a cut or a hangnail. This remover doesn't sting at all! Awesome for kids!!!

The only thing I didn't like was the funny squeaky feeling I got when I rubbed the polish off. It was very odd... not like nails on a chalkboard, but like when you get too much essential oils on your hands and they make that funny noise when you rub your fingers together... or too much hair product on your hands and then they feel weird. I washed my hands with soap and the feeling went away.

Thank you Pure Vitality Beauty for giving me a discount on this product for review purposes!

What to do with a watermelon on a Saturday afternoon

I got a free watermelon slicer for and popcicle molds for review, so I decided to kill two birds with one stone (well several birds actually) and try out my watermelon slicer, my popsicle makers, and give you an awesome recipe all in the same blog post
Look at me. Oh yes, so good.
sorry.

First, cut the watermelon.

I loved the plastic red thing, it was great because I didn't worry about cutting off my finger while I cut up the watermelon.
I liked the melon baller, the carver was meh.
The slicer itself was... lacking.

It left a lot of the fruit behind and cut it in a weird shape, so I gave up and just cut it like a normal person (see video).
*EDIT* I did go back and see I used the slicer upside down. I got another melon and tried again. It was better, but i found it easier to cut normal with a knife and use the red wedge to cut if off, as shown in my video. again, I REALLY like the red wedge.

If you have ugly watermelon… blend it.

Recipe: Watermelon Popsicles
  1. put watermelon in a blender.
  2. add some OJ (about a fourth as much oj as you have watermelon)
  3. Add a splash of cool-aid or Hawaiian Punch (for extra sweetness)
  4. put in your handy dandy nifty popcicle makers and freeze.
IMG_20160910_170001759
I really like these things, they were easy to use, snapped onto the base well, and stood up in the freezer! They came with two silicone ice pop molds, which were tricky to sit up in my freezer, but I finagled it.

(Take the rest of the blended watemelon/oj mix and throw some American Honey in that sucker.)

If you have pretty watermelon… you can make it drunk.

put it in tuperware, pour in your favorite poison, and let it sit in the fridge for a bit until it soaks it all up.

Happy Saturday!!!

Five things you can do with your FREE Bluetooth Waterproof speaker

What can you do with a waterproof speaker, besides using it in the shower?

1. Music by the pool or beach. Having a pool party and don't want to risk ruining your fancy schmancy speaker system? Hook this thing up, pair it to your phone (safely inside your bag or house) and enjoy!

2. Put it in your car. Is your car still stuck in the dark ages? Hook your bluetooth speaker up to the rear view mirror and jam out.

3. Clip it to your backpack while you go on an adventure to the park, hiking, camping, etc. Now you can take your music anywhere!

4. Clip it to your bike. It's dangerous to ride a bike with headphones; you can't hear traffic around you! If you use a speaker, you can hear your music safely, and still be aware of your surroundings.

5. Hide it and scare your roommates. Put it under the couch, in the closet, in a kitchen drawer, and play scary music or voices through it. Be sure to videotape results.

I'm giving away this bluetooth waterproof shower speaker by SoundSOUL! You can see my Amazon review of the product here.

How little can you spend on groceries?

I'm happy and proud to say I spent $40 on groceries this week, and that's it.

I am lucky, though. I live in an area where there are 2 Aldi's near my house. Most people would be lucky to get what I got for $80! You can't beat a bag of grapes for a dollar.

I work two jobs, and run this blog and youtube channel. I have exactly one day off. One day to do everything; laundry, house cleaning, cooking, rest, and planning for the week. If that one day doesn't get used to the fullest, the rest of the week is fairly unorganized. That's one of the things The Life and Lies is trying to be; a great place where you can learn quick ways to get your busy life under control.

My sister and blogger-friend Hannah over at The Leininger Homestead posted an article about saving money during grocery shopping, and I figured I'd share it with you guys, as well as give you a few of my hints on saving money while grocery shopping!

1. Plan meals ahead of time--in detail. Don't do just vague "Okay we'll do pasta for dinner, oatmeal for breakfast, sandwich for lunch, and some granola bars. Cool, done." Figure out exactly how much of everything you need, and start with what you have in your fridge/pantry.

2. Buy non-perishables in enough quantity to make more than what you need, but always make less than what you need. I know that looks weird on the surface but hear me out. Say you're making home-made Mac n Cheese for dinner. You need chicken, pasta, cheese, peas, and maybe some bacon if you're up for that. Bacon can be frozen, so open the package, cook just enough, throw the rest in the freezer for a rainy day. Get twice as much pasta as you need (bonus points if it's on sale!) and cook just a little (maybe you buy two boxes, but you only cook half a box; now you have pasta for other dishes in the future). Make a side dish to finish the meal. Now you have food for the day, a side dish to help fill you up, and enough supplies to make something else on a day you can't go shopping.

And debatably  the most important rule of all:

3. NEVER buy ANYTHING full price.

That's right, you read that correctly. There is literally no reason to buy anything full price; not in the day and age of competition, price matching, cashback, and coupons. If you're planning ahead, you can know where to go to get stuff on sale, you can hunt down coupons online, or you can even do your meal plans starting with Checkout 51 or Ibotta, by looking at what you'll get cashback on and planning your meals accordingly. Crazy Coupon Lady app teaches you how to stack coupons to basically get free stuff. Once you decide you won't buy anything full price, you start thinking differently!

Welcome to the challenge.

The Essential Bodybuilding Cookbook

The Essential Bodybuilding Cookbook by Ryan Powell
Genre: Health, recipes
ISBN: 978-1911364078
Published: Carrillo Press (August 27, 2016)
Rating: 5 bodybuilding2
Amazon | Goodreads

There’s a lot to be said for a book that focuses on what the body NEEDS. We see so many things out there today; adds, tv shows, articles, trying to tell you what your body wants, what would make you happy, what will make you skinny, what will make you strong.

But there’s a lot of science behind bodies, and a lot of science behind food, and it’s fairly simple: eat good quality food, eat the right amount, and your body will take care of you.

bodybuilding

(excerpt from the early part of the book)

This book starts by looking at what food really is, what kind of food your body needs, and how four basic principles on how to make it happen:

1. Whole foods are better than packaged or processed

2. Pre-planning is essential.

3. Buying fresh foods can be more expensive but you can plan ahead and buy at stores where they’re on sale, and it will force you to avoid waste

4. Remove temptations.

It gives a specific list of staples you should stock your kitchen with, then helps you figure out exactly how much you should eat, and what you should eat.

Are you seeing something important here, guys? this isn’t just for body-builders. This book is for everyone. It doesn’t matter what your goals are for your body… this is how food is supposed to work.

Moving on to the recipes: these all look amazing. I wish there were more pictures, but the instructions are super easy to follow.

I recommend this book for anyone who eats food… so, everyone?

Special thanks to the Lasselle Press team for sending me a review copy!

What can you do with essential oils?

Answer? a lot.

There are two basic categories (in my mind) oils you can put on the surface of your skin, and oils you can put inside your body. It is important to figure out what kind of oil you get.

This oil is not for consumption (it is important to note, however, that apx 70% of whatever you put on the surface of your skin is absorbed into your blood stream, so you still need to be careful).

I love this oil by Radha Beauty (thanks for the free bottle!). It’s a huge bottle, smells amazing, has an easy to use dropper, and doesn’t irritate my skin. I used it in my oil diffuser and before I even lit the candle my kitchen smelled minty. mmmmmm.

CrZTFKNW8AAH3gv

I also put some on my laundry before I threw it in the dryer. That was a nice experience.

I put a few drops on my pillow, and I didn’t want to get up this morning. I also put two drops on eac of my shoulders, since my shoulders both have knots the size of a tennis ball in them. Guys, this stuff was more intense than tiger balm! and it smelsl better! I will be repeating that on a regular basis.

Can’t think of a single thing I don’t like about this oil. It’s totally worth it. Get it!

Amazing wash bags

Here’s a secret; when I went to college, I stole stuff from my mom.
Sorry, mom.

I stole some of her mesh lingerie bags to wash my leotards and tights. You can’t wash tights without a wash bag because they get all knotted up and wrapped around things, and then you have a stretchy wet mess. So I took some wash bags.

I managed to get a great deal (coughfreecough) from Absodeals on some wash bags, and I gave them a shot yesterday.

A photo posted by haley (@thelifeandlies) on

If you’re like me (and you probably are if you’re reading this blog) you have exactly one day off per week. One day to do everything: cooking, cleaning, laundry, the cat box, etc. I don’t have time to do two loads of laundry, I’d rather do just one if I can help it.

That is the biggest pro for these wash bags: they’re slightly thicker and more heavy duty than normal mesh bags; so I can throw my stuff in there and put it in with my jeans and towels and socks. One load of laundry! no more separating out the delicates!

Another thing I liked was the size; the bra bags were kind of small, you can only fit one bra per bag, but the other square bags were very large. I didn’t even end up using the biggest one.
A photo posted by haley (@thelifeandlies) on

The cons are that because they’re thicker, they don’t allow the lint to escape the mesh. So I opened up my wash bag with my sports bra in it, and it was covered in lint and little bits and pieces of stuff. That’s annoying. My tights, running shorts, and ballet skirt were fine (I guess because those things don’t produce lint?) but the sports bra I’ll have to run a lint roller over it after it’s dry.

Still, I’m happy with them, and will probably return my mother’s wash bags to her now that I have a set of my own.

Happy wash day!

Lavender Gin and Tonic

Happy Thursday! In my opinion, thursday is even worse than Wednesday; it’s past the middle of the week, but it’s not the weekend yet.

So to cheer up your thursdays a little, I’m throwing in a Thirsty Thursday driink for Lavender Gin and Tonic. It’s super easy and sooooo delishious especially if you love lavender as much as I do.

And if you do love lavender, you should seriously consider getting the best lavender syrup out there.

IMG_20160831_202510733

1. pour syrup into your cup. (or jar).

IMG_20160831_202601791

2. add the same amount of gin.

3. Add tonic water to taste, and add ice and a straw. mmmmmm.
